In the article, Study Sheds Light Into the Nature of Embryonic Stem Cells, it talks about a study at the University of Edinburgh that proved that embryonic stem cells have cells inside of them that can change what they can become. It is said that that discovery can help scientists catch the stem cells at just the right time when they are changing. That could widen the field of what they can become. Embryonic stem cells used to be though of as single-celled, but that was disproven through this experiment. Now they know that they are made up of different cell types that can change into other cells. Scientists also found out that embryonic stem cells can turn into cells that have to do with the placenta. This discovery was said to have helped improve scientists' abilities to make specific cells in the lab.

This article was very helpful when researching the pros of the usage of adult stem cells versus embryonic. It is known that a lot of people have previously favored embryonic stem cells rather than adult because it was believed that embryonic stem cells multiply in a greater magnitude compared to adult stem cells. Previous knowledge told us that embryonic could multiply over 200 doublings of the population before the cells started to die. Scientists measure the age of groups of cells by looking at their population’s doubling rate. The age of the cells indicate the strength of the cells and the probability of a successful treatment. A study done at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in 2005 showed us that adult stem cells are capable of multiplying to the same capacity as embryonic, meaning that adult stem cells are just as effective. Another point to consider is the possibility of rejection. When using embryonic stem cells there is a possibility that the patient given the stem cells will reject them because of their unfamiliar nature. With the use of adult stem cells the cells are taken from the patient and will not be foreign to their immune system, making rejection less likely. If it is possible that adult stem cells have the capability to work just as well as embryonic stem cells then I think we should put our time and effort into researching those possibilities. Adult stem cells can further our research, knowledge and treatment just as well as embryonic. I think the most reasonable thing to do is put our funding into the further researching of adult stem cells and avoid this controversy all together. If something is believed to be unethical to many groups of people it will be difficult to make it possible to research. Adult stem cell research is working and there is no controversy behind it so why not use what we already know can work?

There were many concerns that the embryonic stem cells would not work or would cause dangerous side effects. However, four months after the women were treated they showed no signs of side effects or signs of rejecting the cells. They also didn't develop any tumors or growths that have sometimes been seen in animal testing.

My article was from the Americans for Cure Foundation, and it was about what stem cell research is, what diseaes scientists saying they can cure, and how they are going to go through in that process. Also, there were a few main points on why stem cell research is good and a couple on why people believe the opposite. This article opened my eyes and gave me a few points that I had not already known! Obviously, when one thinks of stem cell research they think of curing diseases, which is true, that is mainly the point, but how the whole process works is very important. First of all, a stem cell can copy itself to make others just like it and it has the ability to turn into any of the body's cell types. Embryonic cells, to be more specific are unspecialized cells that are in a blastacyst. Scientist found that these embryonic cells can turn into any cell type, for example a pancreas cell allowing it to produce insulin or heart muscle cells, therfore curing someone who may have one of these diseases. Those were just a couple compared to how many cures scientist are researching. In this article, it also elaborates on how much more beneficial embryonic stem cells are than adult stem cells becuase adult stem cells only have to ability to turn into different kinds of cells within the basic cell that it already is. This is just proving the point that embryonic usage is more benefical then adult stem cells, as some think otherwise. In conclusion, embryonic stem cell usage is something that is real, and contoversial but it is also something that many people wish for everyday, people that have diseases that just want to be cured. I looked up the use of adult and embryonic stells with athletics. From my research I have concluded that a lot of irreversible damages can come about from the use of adult stem cells. I looked up an article about Peyton Manning's use of adult stem cells for his neck inury. Not only did the process not work, but it was also not approved by the FDA and has sparked dissaproval from the football society. Using stem cells in athletics can cause more life-long damages such as tumors, and often times the procedure doesn't even work. It is also very controversial, some people believe using stem cells is like using a performance enhancing drug. It is said that after athletes have received stem cells there has been a boost in their performance. Many people in athletics are trying to make it illegal to use adult stem cells to help an athlete get better after an injury. Overall, adult stem cells can cause many more issues than the ones that they "fix."

Stem Cell Argument- Corynne Swift block 2

A embryonic stem cell is a fertilized egg. This egg has the capability of becoming a fully grown organism, but since it will be used for research the egg will become nothing more than a replaceable research object. There is also a high risk of getting cancerous tumors from the use of stem cells and the stem cells do not form pure cell cultures.Not only are tumors at risk but other genetic abnormalities are at risk when using embryonic stem cells instead of adult stem cells.
If bone marrow cells were used, people would morally support this use of stem cells over embryonic because you would not be using what could have become a human for research. Bone marrow can be changed into many different types of cells if they are needed if these certain cells are lacking a body. Another positive to bone marrow is that the body will not reject it since it is from it's own body. Adult stem cells are clearly more morally and genetically acceptable for our bodies.

Major improvements have been made in a process to make adult adult tissue into stem cells without using embryonic stem cells. This new method is better in both speed and efficiency. The new technique uses three small drug like chemicals to transform adult cells into stem cells which is called induced pluripotent stem cells. This technique is twice as fast and 200 times as efficient. Researchers found that they could use purified proteins to change adult cells all the way back to the most primitive embryonic-like cells. Not only is this technique fast and efficient, it is also very safe. It is clear that adult cells are a better choice in stem cell research than embryonic stem cells.

The stem cells were injected via the carotid artery, where it traveled directly to the brain. Before injection the stem cells were labeled with quantum dots. The dots emit near infrared light. This allowed the researchers to monitor the stem cells for 4 weeks after the injection without affecting the patient. So, they were able to see the stem cells enter the brain immediately, without entering the general circulation. After 4 weeks, the rats that had been injected with stem cells had a significant recovery of movement, while rats without had no recovery. Examination of the brains with stem cells confirmed that the stem cells had transformed into different brain cells and helped the healing process of the injured brain area. This process of injecting stem cells into the carotid artery is relatively simple and the bone marrow stem cells used are a promising source of donor cells. Therefore, I am for stem cell research and use.

There are many liabilities that go along with people being injected with embryonic stem cells, but my side of the argument states all the liabilities for the people who provide the eggs for the embyonic stem cells in the first place; the women. My article gives an example of just how many embryonic stem cells we would need for just the cases of Diabetes. There were 17 million Diabetes patients in the U.S. by the year 2005, so now we are talking about an even bigger number. Based on research there would be a need for 10-100 human eggs for each patient. That means 170 million to 1.7 billion eggs to treat the Diabetes community as if 2005, which would equal out to about $100,000-200,000 per patient. This is virtually impossible because as of 2000, there was only 60 million american women that could still reproduce. On average, if someone goes under hyper ovarian stimulation, they create about 10-12 eggs per treatment. This means that to meet the quota just for Diabetes, somewhere between 17 million and 170 million women would have to donate. How can we produce these when first off, we don't have enough women, and second, the procedure of ovarian hyperstimulation in itself is dangerous for the woman? This procedure could create ovarian cysts or cancers, severe pelvic pain, rupture of the ovaries, stroke, lack in fertility and even death in some cases. 2.4-5.5 % of all the women so far who have gone through ovarian hyperstimulation have developed complications.
Not only is the harvesting of eggs for the embryonic stem cells dangerous, it is not a very promising field compared to the usage of Adult stem cells. These have been used to treat Heart disease, Parkinsons disease, spinal cord injuries, and many more diseases. Embryonic stem cell researchers have not made a single cure within the last twenty years.
I am against the use of embryonic stem cells due to the fact that it can hurt the woman, and will never be as effective and safe as the use of Adult stem cells.

After reading my article, I have found that in May 2001, a nine year old boy who was crippled in a wheelchair was injected with stem cells in Moscow. The nine year old child began to suffer from a disease that causes degeneration of parts of the brain that control muscle movements and speech. When diagnosed, you can get poor balance, impaired immune function, and the appearance of red spider veins all over the eyes, ears and cheeks. So far there are no treatments for it and the prognosis is grim. He then was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2005. It grew out of the stem cells in his brain. It was removed in surgery, but afterward it continues to grow back.

"What I learned about my body & the MOL" Melissa Louis Block 4
In the previous unit, I learned many things about the four molecules of life and water. The four molecules of life are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. I learned that each molecule of life has a different job to do in the human body. Proteins build enzymes, combat infection, carry oxygen to cells, provide structural support to the cell, and make hormones. Carbohydrates provide quick energy to the cell. Nucleic acids transfer and store information in DNA and RNA and also provide energy through ATP. Lastly, lipids provide structure, and make up cell membranes. Due to the fact that the four molecules of life are vital to stay alive, it's crucially important to eat a good healthy diet.
Fatty acids are the monomers of lipids. There is a difference between good fatty acids and bad fatty acids. It is an extremely good habit to eat plenty of good fats so your body can have the energy and structure in it's cells that it needs. Good fatty acids are known as unsaturated fats and bad fatty acids are known as saturated fats. The difference is that saturated fats do not contain double bonds between carbon atoms. Saturated fats are unhealthy and are an extremely bad habit to get started on. Saturated fats are found in products and processed foods, such as, dairy products, meats, pastries, and chips. It is important to steer clear of such foods. One the other hand, unsaturated fats contain double bonds between it's carbon atoms in it's chemical structure. They are found in foods such as, nuts, avocados, and olives.

As you can see in the picture above, the saturated fat have no double bonds between carbon atoms and the unsaturated fat shows a double bond between two carbon atoms.
I also learned that it is important to have a good habit of getting a good source of protein in one's diet. Proteins, who's monomer is the amino acid, are very important to my body. As I mentioned earlier, proteins build enzymes. Enzymes are used to speed up chemical reactions in our bodies. An enzyme takes a substrate, that has to fit the shape of the enzyme like a "lock and key" and splits that substrate into usable products and nutrients that our bodies needs. Without enzymes, the chemical reactions in our bodies would not occur fast enough to support human life. Due to this fact, it is very important to keep a protein rich diet. Foods that contain a high amount of protein include nuts, cheese, and meat products.

I learned so much about the vital importance of keeping a healthy diet. I learned good habits such as eating protein rich foods and eating unsaturated fats. I also learned bad habits such as I need to stay away from eating a large amount of satured fats. Lastly, I learned that I need to drink a lot of water so that my body can perform hydrolysis and breakdown the food that I put in my body. I learned many things about the chemical reactions going on inside of me and how the food that I eat affects how my body functions.

I learned that eating a lot of carbohydrates before a big wrestling tournament could be a very good thing. This is because Carbohydrates can give you very good quick energy. Although eating complex carbs could be very beneficial for you, You should not eat simple carbs including, white breads and sugars. This do not give you the proper spurt of energy because once that has passed you will feel lousy.
